What Do RIASEC Letters Mean? A Guide to Reading Your Holland Code

RIASEC is a six-theme framework for describing work interests. A career interest test usually reports your strongest three themes as a Holland Code, such as IAS or SEC. The code does not decide a career for you; it gives you a structured way to compare the kinds of tasks, environments, and problems you may find engaging.

The six RIASEC themes

• Realistic: building, repairing, operating tools, and working with the physical world.
• Investigative: analyzing, researching, observing, and solving complex questions.
• Artistic: creating, designing, writing, and working with original expression.
• Social: teaching, helping, supporting, and developing people.
• Enterprising: persuading, leading, selling, and organizing ventures.
• Conventional: organizing information, maintaining systems, and working accurately with detail.

Why the order of the three letters matters

The first letter represents the interest theme that was strongest in your answers, followed by the next two. An IAS profile, for example, may be drawn to analytical work with a creative and people-oriented element. The code is a shorthand, not a description of every interest you have, and close scores often mean more than one environment could fit well.

Turn a code into career research

1. List occupations connected to your top two or three themes.
2. Read the daily tasks, training path, pay range, and job outlook for a few options.
3. Talk to people in those roles or try a small project before making an expensive commitment.

Interests are one part of a career decision

A satisfying path usually considers interests alongside skills, values, health, finances, location, and opportunity. A Holland Code can widen your list of possibilities and make research more focused, but it cannot replace those other decisions or guarantee satisfaction in a specific job.
