What this Big Five personality test measures
The Big Five model describes personality as five broad traits on continua, rather than assigning a person to one fixed category. The traits are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (sometimes described as emotional sensitivity).
This assessment uses 120 public-domain IPIP items to estimate those traits and their facets. It is designed for self-reflection: a score describes patterns in self-reported answers, not a diagnosis, a prediction of life outcomes, or a permanent label.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Big Five personality test free?
Yes. You can complete the 120-question assessment and receive your five broad trait scores for free. An expanded facet report is optional.
What does OCEAN mean in the Big Five model?
OCEAN is a common shorthand for Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Each is a spectrum, so a result is more useful as a profile than as a type.
How long does the IPIP-120 Big Five test take?
Most people finish in about 15 minutes. Answer according to how you generally are now, rather than how you would like to be.
Is a Big Five result a clinical diagnosis?
No. This is a self-report personality assessment for reflection and education. It cannot diagnose a mental-health condition or replace a qualified professional.
