A Simple Structure for Repair Conversations After Conflict

Repair is not proving who had the better interpretation; it is creating enough clarity and responsibility to decide what changes next.

A repair conversation is an attempt to address impact and restore workable contact after an ordinary disagreement. It is not appropriate when speaking up would create danger, coercion, retaliation, or abuse; those situations require safety-focused and locally appropriate support.

Five parts of a clear repair

  1. Describe the observable event without adding motive.
  2. Name the impact or feeling in your own experience.
  3. Take responsibility for your part without attaching a counter-accusation.
  4. State the need or boundary that matters now.
  5. Make one specific, realistic request and allow an answer.

Keep the goal narrow

Trying to resolve every past conflict at once usually makes the conversation harder to follow. Choose one event or recurring pattern, agree what will be different next time, and decide when to revisit anything larger.

An online communication reflection cannot judge relationship safety, assign blame, or determine whether a relationship should continue.
